Hobie Cats were born in a surfboard shop in Southern California in 1969 and are named after the designer, Hobie Alter. Numerous Hobie catamarans have been designed over the years with the most popular racing boats ranging from 14 feet to 20 feet in length. The boats are easy to launch from sandy beaches, physically rewarding to sail and popular all over the world.
One of the most popular Hobie Cats in Western Australia is the Hobie 16. The Hobie 16 is a 16 foot / 4.9 m catamaran with two sailors and has been raced internationally for the past 40 years. It is a great starter catamaran because used boats are easy to find and many clubs in a variety of locations around Western Australia. The Hobie Cat Association Western Australia (HCAWA) is the regional organization that manages regattas. HCAWA provides support to various Hobie fleets around the state of Western Australia, including a regional calendar of events, news releases, organizing state championships and assisting sailors from WA competing in National and International events.
